Start SQL Converter for Excel just like any other program in Windows. Since it is an Excel Add-In, Microsoft Excel will launch with SQL Converter enabled.

SQL Converter adds a SQL menu to your copy of Microsoft Excel 2000, 2002, or 2003.

Design your database table directly in Excel. Add, Edit, and Order your fields however you like. Choose Auto Design (red car icon) to get some some sensible defaults based on the data in the active worksheet.

Automatic Field Designer

Automatic Field Designer in Excel 2007 on Windows XP

The Automatic Field Designer will identify the header row and help you pick fields based on those already in the worksheet. It will help pick some data types, but don't worry because can easily edit them later.

Table Builder Tabs

The Table Builder has three tabs.

  • Table Design and Mappings
  • SQL Generation Options
  • Export Range

The SQL Generation Options tab lets you change various options for how the MySQL code will be generated. Once you have selected the options you like, move on to the Export Range tab.

The Export Range tab lets you change which data is included in the generated MySQL dump file. Once you have review this and the other tabs, you can choose Export SQL to save the SQL for the current worksheet to disk. You will then be able to upload the resulting file to your database server.

After running the SQL dump, you can review the export statistics and choose to either open the .SQL file or open its parent folder in Windows Explorer.

The resulting .SQL files are plain-text that can even be viewed with Notepad.
